The winner!
The occasionally-maligned Landon Donovan became a U.S. hero in the final moments of the United States’ 1-0 win over Algeria. Donovan knocked home a rebound off a Jozy Altidore shot to give the U.S. the win and allow them to top the group.
Moments before the goal, the U.S. looked to be going home from South Africa. With England having beaten Slovenia 1-0, the U.S. would have finished third in the group with a draw.
FT – The United States wins in dramatic fashion as Landon Donovan scores in stoppage time. Group C winners. They’ll play the runners-up in Group D.
92′ – Corner for Algeria. Foul in box. United States with goal kick. Red card for Algeria.
91′ – GOOOOLLLL!!!!! DONOVAN in stoppage time!!!
89′ – Offsides on Algeria, Buddle gets it deep in box but sloppily gives it away.
87′ – Pressure packed on the pitch as the U.S. press forward.
84′ – Dempsey sails free kick over goal.
83′ – Altidore fouled as he pushes the pace. Red? Nope, just yellow.
82′ – Dempsey gets up all bloodied after getting hit in the face in the box. No card, not seen by the ref.
80′ – Beasley in for Bornstein. It’s all hands on deck.
78′ – Dempsey fouled outside the box and Bradley’s powerful free kick right at keeper.
74′ – Free kick for the U.S. on edge of box after Altidore is fouled. Bradley’s header is high and wide.
72′ – Seven shots on target for the U.S., two for Algeria. None have gone in.
68′ – Altiorde puts a head on it but its saved. Then Algeria nearly takes the lead but shot is wide.
ENGLAND UPDATE: They lead 1-0. As things stand, the U.S. is out. But we know this.
66′ – A corner looks promising, but nobody can get a head on it. Goal kick for Algeria.
64′ – Edson Buddle comes in for Maurice Edu. Bradley looking for a goal here.
63′ – The U.S. stops a promising Algerian attack. 30 minutes to play. Need a goal to win and a win to advance.
57′ – UGH! Altidore sets up Dempsey, who knocks it off the post and can’t connect on the rebound. Pure agony!
55′ – Algeria continue to push pace but no real chances thus far for either side.
48′ – U.S. with a cross off a free kick but easily thwarted by keeper.
47′ – First pressure from Algeria but they are offsides.
46′ – Change made at halftime, Feilhaber coming on for Gomez.
HT – The United States had the chances, but it’s 0-0 after 45 minutes. As it stands, England and Slovenia advance.
42′ – Dempsey tries a long range shot but easily stopped by keeper.
37′ – Donovan steps into a ball that Altidore should have easily put in. It was a nice buildup for the U.S. but the end result was more frustration.
35′ – Dempsey gets a chance in the box but can’t get it past the keeper. Still 0-0
30′ – Corner for Algeria as the game has stalled momentarily. Clearned by the U.S.
26′ – As it stands right now the United States is out of the World Cup but plenty of time to make ammends.
ENGLAND GOAL – Jermain Defoe scores for England to put them up 1-0 and we get a good replay showing the Dempsey was indeed onside.
21′ – So close to a goal. Ball pinballs to Gomez’s foot, he strikes it hard, keeper makes the save. Dempsey buries rebound but is called for offsides. On second viewing, a questionable call.
19′ – Stats so far: Algeria six shots, United States four
17′ – Cherundolo can’t connect on a cross but good build-up by the U.S. on it.
15′ – Algeria with a long range shot that sails into the crowd and well out of danger.
England Update: No score in the 13′
12′ – Yebda of Algeria picks up the first yellow card on the day. So far the officials have not been noticeable, the way it should be
9′ – Dempsey with a free kick from long range, sails a bit over the goal. Not a bad attempt.
7′ – Gomez nearly counters with a strike that is saved. This game has picked up quickly.
6′ – I need to stop typing like that. Algeria nearly goes up 1-o as the defense collapses again only to be saved by the cross bar.
5′ – Edu makes a steal and tries to feed Donovan but is broken up. The U.S. looks less shakey than normal. Though Bornstein has been beaten once.
4′ – Herculez Gomez, making his first start is fouled in the U.S. half.
1′ – And we’re off. Algeria with the first push and a shot that sails over the goal. Donovan counters with a cross that is picked up by the keeper.
Algeria is in all green, the U.S. in all white.
Bill Clinton is at today’s game.
